Kaylee Bogina, an Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier and former All-American and member of multiple NCAA Division 2 national championship teams at Adams State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her return to the track for the first time this year March 31 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif. Bogina, who ran 2:34:57 in her debut Dec. 3 at the California International Marathon to qualify for the Olympic Trials on Feb. 3, 2024, in Orlando, Fla., discusses training with the post-collegiate group in Boulder mentored by Heather Burroughs and Mark Wetmore that includes Jenny Simpson, Val Constien, Micaela DeGenero and Mackenzie Caldwell. She qualified for the Olympic Trials along with Caldwell, who ran 2:34:18, as well as her older brother and former Pittsburg State athlete Austin Bogina, who clocked 2:17:15. Bogina explains the benefits of training in a high volume program like Adams State under the guidance of coach Damon Martin and how that experience prepared her well for the build toward her first marathon. She examines the lessons learned racing Nov. 5 and clocking 73:04 in the Half-Marathon at the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and how contributed to her training for the marathon in Sacramento one month later. Bogina shares how instrumental having Caldwell as a friend and training partner has been, in addition to learning from her brother, who competed at the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. She analyzes the transition in workouts to get back to the track and her aspirations to improve on her personal-best 33:07.88 from last year at the Sound Running TEN meet in California, and eclipse the 33-minute barrier for the first time. Bogina also speaks about her ambitions to improve on her personal-best 16:07.60 in the 5,000 and to break the 16-minute barrier for the first time. She also highlights opportunities to compete at championship events on the USATF Running Circuit, in addition to targeting another half-marathon in the fall, potentially in Europe. Bogina reflects on Adams State winning the Division 2 women's national titles in cross country in Washington and indoor track and field in Virginia Beach to increase their all-time program total to 41 NCAA crowns and 59 overall including NAIA victories, in addition to looking forward to the team's pursuit of the triple crown May 25-27 at the outdoor championship meet in Pueblo, Colo., and the advantage the Grizzlies will have over several national programs being able to compete at 4,700 feet elevation. She also shares her experiences working the past two years as an account representative for Gear Up Sports after earning her Masters degree in sports management at Adams State.
