Gracie Hyde, a graduate student-athlete at Adams State in Colorado and the NCAA Division 2 indoor record holder in the 3,000 meters and as part of the Grizzlies' distance medley relay, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on achieving both records Feb. 9-10 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Hyde became the first female athlete in Division 2 history to eclipse the 9-minute barrier in the 3,000 by running 8:58.33, along with joining Lieke Hoogsten, Victoria Amiadamen and Jessica Simon in clocking 11:08.94 in the DMR, which lowered the all-time division mark of 11:12.47 produced by Grand Valley State at last year's Division 2 indoor championships. Adams State also had a second DMR lineup clock 11:16.30, which ranks No. 5 in division history. She also reacts to being the first female athlete in division history to have both records simultaneously. Hyde revisits the end of her career at Arkansas and being medically retired and thinking she would not run again in college. She shares the quick transition of transferring to Alamosa, Colo., and attending Adams State to work toward her MBA, and joining the Grizzlies' program. Hyde explains the adjustment of training at 7,500 feet elevation and reminisces about her first workout with nine-time Division 2 champion and Irish standout Stephanie Cotter, who only has outdoor eligibility remaining this spring with the Grizzlies. She expresses gratitude for the guidance and mentorship of Adams State coach Damon Martin, and how he has demonstrated belief in Hyde throughout her fall training and shared ahead of the 3,000 race in Boston that she was capable of breaking the 9-minute barrier. Hyde also shares how meaningful it was to have Arkansas women's head cross country coach Megan Elliott in attendance in Boston, along with several of her former Razorback teammates. She also explains how significant it was to receive a congratulatory message from former Arkansas head women's coach Lance Harter following her record-setting achievements. Hyde looks forward to helping Adams State in its pursuit to repeat as Division 2 indoor women's team champions March 8-9 at Pittsburg State in Kansas, in addition to trying to help the Grizzlies capture their first women's outdoor national crown in May at Emporia State in Kansas.
