Miguel Coca, a senior at Adams State and the reigning NCAA Division 2 indoor mile champion along with holding the division record in the 3,000 meters at 7:44.90, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss being the top seed in both events for the Grizzlies in their pursuit of a men's team title March 8-9 at the NCAA Division 2 Indoor Championships at the Plaster Center at Pittsburg State in Kansas. Coca revisits eclipsing the 3,000 record Feb. 10 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University, followed by Loic Scomparin of Colorado School of Mines at 7:46.11 and Hamza Chahid from Wingate running 7:47.70 for the top three performances in Division 2 indoor history. He reflects on how meaningful it was to receive congratulations on the infield following the race from former Division 2 record holder Christian Noble, who is now a professional athlete for New Balance Boston after clocking 7:50.98 for Lee University (Tennessee) in 2022 at Boston University. Coca also explains how significant it was to achieve his first sub-4 mile effort Feb. 24 by clocking 3:56.38 at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invitational at the Dempsey facility in Seattle after he just missed eclipsing the barrier Jan. 27 by running 4:00.31 at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque. Following the outdoor season last year, Coca shares how he was prepared to stop competing as a collegiate student-athlete after placing second in the 1,500-meter final in May at the Division 2 outdoor championship meet in Pueblo, Colo., deciding to take several months away from the sport to focus on his academics and other activities, before eventually speaking with Adams State coach Damon Martin late last year to explore a possible return. Coca expresses gratitude for the leadership, insight and experience of Martin, in addition to the support of his teammates, including Romain Legendre, who produced the Division 2 indoor 5,000-meter record of 13:24.09 on Dec. 2 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University. He also speaks about the inspiration gained from teammate Gracie Hyde achieving the Division 2 women's 3,000 record of 8:58.33, along with contributing to the Grizzlies setting the all-time division mark of 11:08.94 in the DMR at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Coca also analyzes the battle for the Division 2 men's team crown, with Adams State seeking its first title since 2015 in a matchup against reigning champion and host Pittsburg State, relying only on athletes in the 400, 800, mile, 3,000, 5,000 and distance medley relay. He also shares the motivation to become the first Adams State male athlete to win the mile and 3,000 titles at the same Division 2 indoor final.
